Birth and Elementary Education
Abhay Charanaravind Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born on 1 September 1896, on the second day of Janmashtami, in a Bengali family in Calcutta, to Suvarna Vaishnav. These were known as Abhaya Charan, meaning fearless and one who takes refuge at the feet of Lord Krishna.
They were also called Nandu Lal as they were born on Nandotsav. The father’s name was Gaur Mohan Dey, a cloth merchant, and mother’s name was Rajni, a housewife. The father nurtured son Abhay Charan as a Krishna devotee. As a child, he preferred to go to the temple, instead of playing with children. His mother died at the age of 14.
At the age of 22, he was married by his father to 11-year-old Radha Rani Devi, at the time of marriage, he had a pharmacy business. In 1922, he met the famous philosopher Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati, who was the founder of 64 Gaudiya Math (Vedic School).
Eleven years later, in 1933, Swamiji duly received initiation from him in Prayag. He respected his guru very much and worked hard to fulfill his command.
He also supported Gandhiji in the non-cooperation movement for the freedom movement.
After this, Vrindavan Dham came and engaged in Krishna’s devotion with great dedication and devotion. This historic Shri Radha started living in Damodar temple itself and Swamiji was engaged in serious study and writing for many years.
Swami Ji was a disciple of Bhakti Siddhant Thakur Saraswati, who inspired and encouraged Swamiji to spread Vedic knowledge through the English language, and said, “You are young, brilliant, spread Krishna Bhakti abroad.” Because the knowledge of other countries is coming to our country, but the knowledge of our country is not going anywhere else.
After that, he obeyed his guru and did the work of spreading knowledge in the western world, and to obey the Guru’s command, he retired at the age of 59 and started trying to fulfill the Guru’s command. Today, people of the whole world who have become followers of Sanatan Dharma, and Lord Krishna of Hinduism and the faith in Srimad Bhagwat Gita, the real credit goes to Swami Prabhupada Ji. He has spread Krishna Bhakti in many languages and spread it all over the world.
He continued to transform the knowledge of Srimad Bhagavad Gita into another language and did editing, typing and refinement (ie proofreading) himself. It is said that they also sold free copies themselves so that it could be promoted to all people. He also translated Srimad Bhagavata Purana into the English language.
Today, thousands of women outside India can be seen wearing saris, sandalwood dots and men wearing dhoti kurta and tulsi garlands around the neck. Millions have started vegetarianism, except for the consumption of non-vegetarian food, tea, coffee, onion, and garlic.
They also keep reciting ‘Hare Rama-Hare Krishna’ continuously. ISKCON has built many grand temples and schools in western countries. ISKCON’s followers propagate the Gita and Hindu religion and culture in the world.
The most important contribution of Shri Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada Swami is his books. Bhaktivedanta Swami translated more than 60 volumes. Also translated Vedic scriptures – Bhagavad Gita, Chaitanya Charitamrit and Srimadbhavatam – into the English language.
These books have been translated into more than 80 languages and are being distributed worldwide. According to statistics – over 55 crores Vedic literature has been distributed so far.
His study of the authenticity, depth, and semblance of Sri Prabhupada’s texts is highly valid. The practice of establishing Krishna as the Surveyor of the universe and to always pronounce the words “Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare” was established by the followers.
The pure stream of Krishna devotion started from New York slowly started flowing in every corner of the world. Many countries began to resonate with the sacred hymn of Hare Rama-Hare Krishna. Due to its simple rules and goodwill towards all caste and religion, the number of followers of this temple is continuously increasing. This temple welcomes every person who wants to get absorbed in Krishna. Due to the untiring efforts of Swami Prabhupadji, in a short span of ten years, around 108 temples were constructed in the whole world.
Establishment of ISKCON
When this freighter first arrived in New York City in 1965 at age 70, he had only $ 7 at that time. He also had heart attacks 2 times during his journey of 32 days. When it reached New York City, the war of Vietnam and New York was going on at that time.

Due to which the hippies (who used to roam on bare roads, and intoxicated) got upset by the government there. Then Swamiji thought why not start from this, Swamiji started kirtan for him but these hippies used to insult him, harass him, but still, Swamiji used to make food for him in the morning, and tell the story.
Gradually these people changed and started reciting the Bhagavad Gita, the American government was also happy with them. About 10,000 of his disciples had become here, whom Swamiji sent to preach and teach at different places of the world for preaching.
He translated about 55 million books into other languages during this period. He took care of spirituality and did not encourage any particular religion. In July 1966, after a very difficult year, he founded the International Krishnabhavnamrita Sangh (‘ISKCON’ ISKCON).
It is because of these that there are 12 ISKCON temples in Pakistan, even today, the Bhagavad Gita is told in these temples. His disciples also established such communities elsewhere. In 1972, he established the Vedic system of elementary and secondary education by establishing a Gurukula in Dallas, Texas.
Sri Prabhupada, due to his skillful guiding, made ‘ISKCON’ as more than a hundred temples worldwide in schools, temples, institutes and on 14 November 1977, before going into the ‘Krishna-Balarama Temple’, Vrindavan Dham. Made a large organization of agricultural communities. Today ISKCON has more than eight hundred centers, temples, gurukuls, and hospitals, etc. across the world.
Between 1966 and 1977, he traveled around the world 14 times in 11 years and he also founded Bhaktivedanta Institute to establish the scientific basis of Krishnabhavna. He spent just 2 hours of his life working and worked for 22 hours.
In 12 years, he built 108 temples from 1 temple in many countries of the world, and he also started Jagannath’s Rath Yatra around the world. In the name of Food for Life, he started eating free food, even today, at the Iskcon temple, 14 lakh children are made to eat food by the Iskon temple. The mid-day meal prevalent today is also based on this process.
Shri Prabhupada Ji passed away on 14 November 1977 at Vrindavan Dham in the famous religious city of Mathura. It is said that even when he was lying on his death bed, he was still recording the teachings of Gita Gyan. Despite being a property, he gave all the money to the society.
