What is Hantavirus?
What is Hantavirus: It is also known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. This virus is not spread from one person to another. It spreads when bites of mice, Squirrels, and when exposed to urine, feces, and saliva.
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents or mice, Squirrels. It can cause various disease syndromes in people around the world. Infection with any hantavirus can cause hantavirus disease in people.
History of Hantavirus
In the US, the Hanta virus is known as the “new world” Hantavirus and can cause Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Other Hantaviruses, known as the “Old World” Hantavirus. These viruses are mostly found in Europe and Asia and can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
Each Hantavirus serotype has a specific rodent host species and is transmitted to people via urine, feces, and saliva via aerosolized viruses, and occurs less frequently than bites from infected hosts. In the United States, the most crucial hantavirus that can cause HPS is the Sin Nombre virus, which is spread by the fear mouse.
Where have you been found?
Hantavirus virus surveillance in the United States began in 1993 during a severe respiratory disease outbreak in several regions. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) became a nationally notable disease in 1995. When fever is present in a patient, it is reported publicly through the Nationally Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS).
In 2014, the Council of State & Territorial Epidemiologists confirmed the laboratory to include HPS and non-pulmonary hantavirus infection infections that began reporting in 2015.
As recently as 2020, in March, one person has died from the Hantavirus in Greece, China.
